Cherpantier/ Charpentier

Location of a family

The success of such a search depends first on the reliability of the family descendants information. What was exactly the original surname in France?

The form “SHERBON…” or “SHARBON…” has to be excluded because of its very-English appearance.

CHARPENTIER is common in a large North part of France and CHERPANTIER essentially in Maine, Anjou and Poitou.

CHERPANTIER is not common and may be an incorrect spelling for the very common CHARPENTIER, name of occupation (carpenter).

The following spellings also exist in the department of Maine-et-Loire (# 49) : CHARPANTIER, CHERPENTIER.  In the department of Aube (#10, Champagne), in the town of Avant, a family was named as well CHARPENTIER as CHARPANTIER or CHERPANTIER.

As “Jean” and “CHARPENTIER” are so common in France, it seems difficult to suggest a precise location of origin. Of course, the “German” forms of his childrens’ first names can suggest an origin in Lorraine, Alsace, Sarre or even Germany…

The source may be in the origin of the choice of Jean to convert his last name to SHERBONDY.

Thus, we have searched the localities in France that could evoke this name and found the following (please see also the map):
